Designing Assessments

This is an intensive two day training workshop with self-directed pre and post workshop activities on Designing Assessments. This is for staff in education and training organisations that assess not only unit standards, but NZ Diploma in Business type prescriptions as well as percentage marked internal courses.

If you or your organisation is struggling to meet external moderator requirements Designing Assessments is the workshop for you. It includes full details of what external moderators (e.g. NZQA) are looking for and how to structure your assessments to meet their expectations without disadvantaging your students or making the assessments too difficult to mark. The workshop is itself based on a NZ Qualifications Framework unit standard and provides 8 credits towards the National Certificates/Diploma in Adult Education & Training (Levels 4-6).

The unit standard covered is: 

11552: Design and evaluate assessment materials (level 5, credits 8)

  • Review of key assessment principles
  • Matching the level of the assessment to the standard/course component.
  • Assessment activity development
  • Selecting appropriate assessment methods
  • Marking scheme and evidence and judgment statement development
  • Structuring assessments for easy access by students
  • Moderation consideration when designing assessments
  • Getting feedback on your assessment designs

Entry Requirements

The workshop is open to existing trainers/teachers/assessors in training establishments, industry training organisations, large corporate and small commercial organisations and community education organisations. 

The following requirements apply:

Participants should have completed unit standard 4098 assessor training or be able to demonstrate equivalent skills

Workshop assessment

  • You must design and evaluate assessments for 2 different standards or course components
  • You will do this as a self-directed assignment in your own workplace after the training workshop.
